Scherwitz, who taught 10th grade English at Brazosport High School in Freeport, was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child and improper relationship between educator and student. Scherwitz allegedly began exchanging explicit text messages with the student, which led to a sexual relationship that lasted for about two weeks leading up to prom night. The teacher allegedly attended a private party a student’s house. She was consuming alcohol and according to one student “She was wearing no shoes when she showed up…like a cut up, cut off shirt and everything”. When she was told it wasn’t right for her to be there and was asked her to leave she left with the teen boy. The “non-school event” was an after-prom party where alcohol and marijuana were present, said Freeport police Interim Lt. Raymond Garivey, who is supervising the criminal investigations division.
the Brazosport ISD received a report of misconduct on April 22, 2013 involving Scherwitz and a student. Campus officials launched an investigation and stated that Scherwitz resigned the same day she was approached about the matter, before officials could conclude their investigation. Scherwitz and her husband had separated before the alleged sexuak relationship with the teen began. Police said the couple’s son is staying with his father.
If convicted, Scherwitz faces up to 20 years in prison on each count.
